Welcome to the Nook of the Neighborhood: East End Cafe. Our cafe is where coffee
is nurtured just like our community- with intention and care. Here we want the quality of our
coffee mentioned with the same regard as our service. This dedication of ours comes from the
love and shared works from within the East End- a once segregated neighborhood left to the
members of its community to turn into a thriving space where culture, education, and ingenuity
overlap. And that they did! Over the years, the number black owned businesses and social
groups that once held the community up fell, and so did the resources and sense of community
as a result. LaMonte and Simone Williams- who bought their first home and started a family in
the East End community- have invested with all their hearts and faith in this very place. East
End Cafe: Where we exist to affirm every person to be authentic & proud of their community
while being valued.

Here at East End we pride ourselves on working in tandem with the city of Newport
News, Virginia. From our organic, single origin, air roasted beans- to our paper supplies,
circulating business within the city has only panned out to be a win! Every latte and every gallon
of drip coffee from various countries has touched down in Newport News at peak freshness,
green and yet to be roasted. This is all thanks to our local coffee suppliers- Fennario’s Coffee
Roasters
. Our relationships with Fennario’s as well as our local tea vendor Brown Leaf Tea Bar,
started long before the doors of the shop ever opened, with fellowship & networking within the
community. Now not only do we get to say we have the freshest coffee and the most
intentionally crafted teas in all of Newport News! But we can also say we’re working hand in
hand with local businesses that have the same goals as us.
Having the highest quality products is crucial to us at East End Cafe because the
members of this community are worth the investment! It helps us to foster the inherent value we
see in every patron of our business. With every sip, one should be reminded not only of the
quality of the drink, but the care and passion that went into the making of it. It didn’t come from a
big corporation halfway across the globe packaged, processed, shelved, & hashed out months
down the line. It came from home, right here in Newport News, Virginia- hot out the air roaster!
Air roasting is an alternative method that is overall healthier, more consistent, and better for
the environment
. Members of our community should have access to these healthier options as
well as the knowledge of its importance! This opens the door for us to seek other healthier
alternatives to our everyday lifestyle choices.
Finding the right staff or “family” would also prove to be rewarding for the cafe. There’s
only one person that can ensure that the effort & care has been passed on into your hands,
that is the person behind the apron! Through a unique vetting process, East End Cafe has built
a team of young creatives that have taken to the beans as if to only conquer a new feat! And
that they have! Through their diligent training and their understanding of how we’re bridging
coffee and community, they have pioneered new spaces within themselves that have allowed
new drinks to emerge like our ever popular “Unity Banana Pudding” latte- made by our newest
Lead Barista in training, with ease. Once given the opportunity and freedom to explore, our
baristas have excelled creatively & have taken a simple bean and turned it into an
accomplishment that they can be proud of! Coffee: something so universal has been able to
service our community at East End in such a specific and impactful way,
tending to the direct
needs of the community. That is our goal here as a third space: to be a pillar and a catalyst for
change and growth.

The Elders remember. They remember when there were Black owned grocery stores,
hair salons, and tailors. They remember when the schools were overcrowded, underfunded, and
still the epicenters of evolution. They remember when the church was a place for worship, a
theatre, and a place for political organizers to gather safely. They remember when the
community was fostered in every way
: from the paving of the roads to access homes better, to
the credit circles ran to educate the families within them. At East End we are building an
environment that builds bridges between the life they knew then; the access, technology, and
resources of today; and the total shift of the landscape that comes with the future.
